Have you tried acupressure?

Has any one tried acupressure before? I have been a big fan of all things Eastern Medicine wise since acupuncture changed my life a few years ago. My only problem was that it takes weeks to get an appointment with my girl April, I will only go to her, she is the best.

So I was quite excited when I was contact to try an acupressure mat by the people at Dosha Mat. They make these great acupressure mat that come in lavender and teal ( I mean what great colors as well!) Here are some of the benefits of using an acupressure mat according to the Dosha Mat website

Studies have shown that acupressure mats can have incredible health effects, including the following:

1. Reduction of pain and soreness
2. Deep calm and relaxation
3. Reduction of stress and anxiety
4. Improved sleep
5. Weight-loss
6. Increased circulation
7. Rejuvenation of the skin
8. Improved digestion
9. Increased energy levels
10. Reduction of cellulite
11. Alleviates arthritis
12. Alleviates fibromyalgia
13. Aids myofascial pain syndrome
14. Alleviates sciatica pain
15. Faster recovery after workouts
16. Lower cortisol levels

I was told to start off slow with my new acupressure mat, because it takes time to get use to using one. So I am starting out easy and using it on the couch, but seriously how pretty is this!

I will update more in about a week or so once I have had the chance to use it!

Reasons to love Aaptiv

Scale and Freshness: More than 2,500 classes are available on the platform. There are 20 active trainers who create new classes each week. More than 50 classes are added to the Aaptiv platform every week. Each class is individually produced in a professional recording space, with state-of-the-art sound mixing technology powered by a talented sound engineering team.
Affordability: For $14.99 a month or $99.99 for the year, members get unlimited, on-demand access to classes in running, cycling, elliptical, strength training, stair climbing, and more. Access to exceptional personal training has never been easier, coming at a fraction of the cost of hiring a personal trainer, purchasing expensive equipment, or being confined to one fitness location.

Convenience: Wherever individuals prefer to work out -- at the gym, at home, on the road for business -- Aaptiv goes along with its members. This factor has helped Aaptiv scale much more quickly than services that are confined to particular equipment or studio locations. Aaptiv classes can be taken anywhere, at any time.

Empathy: Most fitness solutions expect people to change their programs and routines. Aaptiv lets people choose the workout types and locations they prefer, and “meets” each member on their own fitness journey. Trainers conceive of and produce workout classes that suit the needs of people at every stage of fitness: novice, beginner, intermediate, or advanced. A Facebook community of more than 22,000 devoted Aaptiv members interact regularly with trainers to learn about how they can get even more out of their workouts.

Differentiators: Aaptiv is the only fitness company that focuses exclusively on audio content. Audio as a means is also underappreciated. It’s the most natural fashion for consuming content because it’s how people already communicate. The success of the medium is reflected in the growth of Audible, podcasts, and products like Amazon’s Alexa, Google Now, and Siri. Aaptiv’s all-you-can-eat model provides accessibility that has never existed in fitness before.

Aaptiv App Follow Up

So a few weeks ago, I wrote about the Aaptiv App and the new workouts they are offering.

Now I wanted to let you know what I thought of the workouts on the Aaptiv App. I decided to first try an elliptical workout. Now I will be the first to admit that often I just phone it in on the elliptical and am really not 100% into it. Well with this workout I did not get that chance.

Jamie's voice was super engaging and keep me right in the workout the whole time. I love that she had me keep changing resistance (something I never do on my own). It keep my head and body in
the game the whole time. I really pushed myself and after 24 minutes burned about 350 calories!

I was totally pumped and ready for Day 2.

Next I tried a yoga workout. I loved having the voice to coach me through the moves so that I did not have to look at anything. This was one I for sure enjoyed.

Day 3 I decided to go with strength training and this was an awesome workout. I loved Sultan's motivation and the music was on point for sure!

I am continuing to use the Aaptiv App and I really enjoy the pre-selected music and the motivation to push me along through the workouts. If you have not yet, give the Aaptiv App a try for 7 days free!

New Maternity Workout Launch

I am a big proponent of working out while you are pregnant (nope no more babies here), but I did workout with both my pregnancies up until I went to the hospital. So when the people at the Aaptiv App contacted me about promoting the new maternity line I was in.

Here is the info on the new program:

We’ve recruited top-tier talent to lead the design and development of the maternity program, including Kira Kohrherr of FitBump, yoga guru and author, Kristin McGee, and expert Aaptiv trainers who are trained and certified in pre and postnatal exercise. Earlier this month we launched stroller workouts and first trimester workouts (second is launching June 1 and third to follow!). Each week will include both strength and cardio exercises specifically designed to prepare a woman’s body for birth. So not only do we have your back for 9 months, but we’re right there with you to get you back on track after a baby. Whether you’re a marathoner or novice runner, getting back into shape with a stroller or a busy schedule is a new experience for any mom.

I mean seriously how awesome does that sound? I love that all the workouts are audio based and come with playlists. This is totally my type of thing. Now don't get worried non-preggo friends, they have tons of other workouts. Here are some examples:

  • Full & half marathon and 5 & 10k training programs to get you ready for your race
  • High intensity interval training to help you more effectively burn calories, build muscle, and lose weight
  • Monthly challenges with targeted goals to challenge and motivate
  • Curator playlists hand-selected by our elite trainers, brands we love, notable personalities, and more
Many of the programs are only 7-10 minutes long! Again how awesome is that. Visit this link to get started on your free 1 week trial and I will post again after I give the programs a try as well!

Beets BLU Bluetooth Weight Bathroom Scale Review

The amazing people at Beets BLU have asked me to try one of their products again. This time it was the Beets BLU Bluetooth Weight Bathroom Scale! Not going to lie I have had my eye on this product for a while.

First of all this was the most easy thing in the world to set up. The best part, all the instructions are on the back!

By the time I had the app downloaded to my phone the scale was up and running. I love that the scale has all these features with the app:

  • Wireless Scale measures people's muscle mass, body weight with body fat percentage, water (hydration level). Scale supports kg and lb weight mode
  • Connects to mobile via Bluetooth Smart (4.0), uploads all information to free native mobile application for Android and iOS, with saving history. Recommended weight limit is 150 kg/330 lbs
  • Helps you to analyze the data and choose the most appropriate way to track your weight loss. Our scale is high precision
  • iOS: Uploads all measurements to the Apple Health app (configurable)
  • Our biometric scale is suitable for adult men, women. It's a great device for slim, normal and overweight people

I have been using it most morning (best time to weigh yourself!)

Here is the screen shot of the information it gives you right to your phone! How awesome is this!

I feel this is a better way to track weigh then just the weight itself.

Thanks Beets BLU

Beets Blu Wireless Bluetooth Smart 4.0 Heart Rate Monitor

I was recently contacted by the people at at Beets to try their Beets Blu Bluetooth Smart Heart Rate Monitor.  I love to try new fitness gear so this was a treat.

After reading the functions of the Beets Blu Bluetooth Smart Heart Rate  I was excited to try it.

  • Heart rate sensor with belt around chest delivers the most accurate heart rate readout thanks to ECG-based technology
  • Smoothly sync with iOS phones (iPhone 5, 4S) and selected Android devices* No dongle required
  • System consumes low energy therefore a small firmware battery is enough for more than a year
  • Our recorder works with all popular apps like Endomondo, Runkeeper, Map My Run, etc
  • Wearable tracker approaches to running, fitness, crossfit, spinning, workout, exercise and other athletic sport

It looked easy enough to set up from the box.

I downloaded the app and I was ready to go. Here is a screen shot of the app when I was working out:

I found the app was a little hard at first to get use to but once I learned my way around it (and set up my profile) it worked great. I love that unlike my old heart rate monitor it tracks my work outs and I do not have to wear another watch. (For some reason I really did hate the other watch). I also like that you can set alerts if you are working to hard or not hard enough. I used that function on my old monitor when I was pregnant with my girls. I will have to say that this will be replacing my old heart rate monitor and will become part of my work out from now on.

***No compensation was received for this post, but I was sent the monitor show to try out.

TKO Ab Stretch 4-Way Resistance Bands Review

I love a good at home workout. Before Little B was born, I started working with a personal trainer that showed me the amazing things I can do with resistance bands. Let me tell you I have never been in better space then when I work out with them.

When I was asked to try TKO's Ab Stretch 4-Way Resistance Bands I jumped at the chance.

I always enjoy when you can tell a product is durable right from the start. Here is what they say about the TKO's Ab Stretch 4-Way Resistance Bands

  • Adjustable tension for varied resistance
  • Lightweight and portable so you can take it on-the-go
  • Tightens abdominals, sculpts arms and back
  • Increase core muscle tone, strength and flexibility
  • Upper and Lower body workout

They do all this and more in your own home for an affordable price. I highly recommend checking them out.

***No compensation was received for this post, all opinions are my own. I was sent a set of resistance bands to test for this post.

TKO JUMP ROPE Review

Recently I was sent the TKO Jump Rope to try out. Here is a little info about the TKO:

Reach your fitness goals with this durable jump rope by TKO.
  • Soft rubber-coated grip
  • Metal ball-bearings
  • 9-foot solid vinyl
  • PVC/polypropylene/steel

First of all these come in the most fun colors ever. I received the blue and yellow version, but like them all. Also it has super comfortable handles that are fun to hold and it so easy to use. I really feel this is a great addition to my workout routines and a good way to change things up! Also they are available at Macy's so that makes them so much easier to get as well. I would say this is a must add to the fitness at home list.

*** I was not compensated for this post but was sent the product to test out.

KushyFoot Review

Recently I was contacted to try out some of the products offer by KushyFoot. Being a busy working mom after seeing the company's site I knew they would be a good fit for me. Here is

The Kushyfoot® Story

Kushyfoot® has been offering stylish legwear solutions while keeping the focus on comfort since 2003. Products either feature a specially designed sole with a massaging sensation or a cushioned sole to help you feel comfortable in your shoes throughout the day. Offering a wide assortment of products ranging from foot covers, socks, knee highs and tights, Kushyfoot® has everything to suit your needs!

So I was excited to see what they would be sending me. Here was all the goodies I received.

I have always wanted a pair of the fold up flats, so this was my favorite item.

Alligator print Flats to Go® are lightweight and ultra portable. Designed with a soft sole, flats can be rolled up or folded so that you can tote them in your purse ready for any potential shoe emergency. Designed for indoor use and occasionally on smooth outdoor surfaces. Great for travel too!

Next is a personal favorite, yoga socks!

Kushyfoot® yoga socks are one-of-a-kind. Made exclusively to fit like a glove, socks feature open toes and a non-slip sole to grip the floor and mat. Perfect for activities that require balance and stability. Yoga socks also keep your feet clean and help warm up feet in winter months when your muscles are cold. Also great for Barre and Pilates!

I loved how grippy these socks are, my feet did not slip at all during my practice, but they seemed a little big to me, I had to roll down my toes a bit to get them to stick out.

These are new to me but I am loving the Pinstripe and Plain Foot covers

Dess up your pumps with Americana-inspired striped foot covers! Available in black to go with any colored shoe.
  • Padded sole to cushion the ball of your foot;
  • Super stretchy design to fit every foot shape and size.
So I was not sure how these would work with a lot of my shoes, but here they are in a pair of slip ons I wore to work the other day.

They fit perfect and you cannot see them at all. I will say after a busy day at work, running around after the girls, and trying to find a new house the extra cushion on my foot was amazing!

Finally was the Athletic Food Covers

Try our new innovative athletic foot cover! Designed to wear with your runners, or canvas sneakers, this foot cover provides extra comfort in your shoes for sport activities. It features:
  • A cushioned sole;
  • Arch support;
  • Stay-put heel
I was not sure how I would like these, but they are great. I loved that I can wear them in the summer with my sneakers and other athletic shoes and not have to worry about sock lines. These are a great addition to my sock drawer for sure.

I would recommend the KushyFoot line as I have found the products very comfortable and super high quality.

** I was not compensated for this post, but was sent the products to review. All opinions are my own.

Balancing work and life.....

Work/Life Balance how often do we hear this concept? I think every professional development session I have ever attended for work talks about this, especially in the time of cell phones and everyone being connected.  So what can we do to make this balance a reality? I will not EVER say I am an expert, but as a full time working mom with two very active little girls I have found some tips that work for me and might work for other as well. Also this is always a work in progress so I would LOVE to hear anyone’s suggestions.  Here are my tips to help you create some balance
whether you are just starting your career or find yourself entering your second decade.

1-      Take a social media break (Yes I know this is hard, but this is the most recent one I have done and oh my gosh, I have so much more time). Now I will not say you have to give it up (I know that is not going to happen) however, I have taken Facebook off my home screen of my phone and try to not check any social media before I get to work or before the girls go to bed during the week. I will tell you I am more relaxed and have more time when I am not seeing what other people are up to. (Notice I did not say I do not look at all…baby steps here….)

2-      Meal Plan This is huge in our house. Here is the menu board for the week. We make a plan, shop over the weekend and have our meals for the week. Now sometimes things come up and we have to move things around but to have this plan in place is a great way to not stress about meals.

3-      Make lunches the night before For those of you that can wake up in the morning and get lunches made before leaving the house, YOU ARE SUPERSTARS. I cannot get up, get everyone ready, feed, and out the door AND make lunches. So I make them all the night before, in the lunch boxes and in the fridge. That is just easier for me.

4-      Use your lunch hour This does mean if you get one. I never use to do this, but my current supervisor told me to use it the best I can. Some days that means running errands, sometimes getting a quick pedicure, others just closing my door and reading a magazine in my office.  I have found that using this time helps me work better and leaves less to do later at home.
*** I will say without #3 and #4 eating well would be really hard for me. I think having the plan and knowing what you are going to eat makes it easier to stay healthy.

5-      Schedule time to exercise I had a big problem with this after Miss E was born. I was worried that I should not spend the time away from her. After Little B, I realized to keep up with these two I need to be sure I keep myself in shape. Now I do not workout anywhere as much as I use to, but I still get it in. After they are both in bed I spend about 30 minutes 2-3 times during the week and once on the weekend (often at naps) getting in a good workout. It makes me happy and able to keep up with them.

6-      Ask for help This might have been the biggest one for me, but asking my hubby to help around the house has made all the difference. If you are a working mom with a spouse you do not have to do it all. Once I asked hubby to take over a few jobs around the house I was happier and so was he (mainly because I was less stressed). Just remember you have to ASK!

7-      Set boundaries with work I work in education, no one is going to die if I do not answer my phone or an email at 10 PM, so I stopped. I realized that I am not that important any my kids are! Simple as that, if you are not delivering babies or putting out real fires, most likely it can wait.

Battle Frog's A Race for the Family: Being “Fit for the Future”

Although Little Miss is not old enough for this race, I would love to do this with her next year!

Let your kids get muddy! At BattleFrog we have races for any age.

TadPole Dash: The TadPole dash  is for 4-8 year olds. The course has 8+ obstacles, through 400 meters, and is guaranteed to deliver a new experience of self-discovery. Children will learn they can take on these new and exciting challenges, while becoming “Fit for the Future”, getting totally muddy and having the time of their lives.

Navy SEALs run the race with the kids, motivating them, entertaining them, and helping them over the tough spots and inspire them with the spirit of never quitting, teamwork and always trying your best. Start a lifetime love of fitness and competition at the Tadpole Dash. http://battlefrogseries.com/tadpole-dash/

BullFrog Mile: For your slightly older kids there is the BullFrog Mile. Your children can test themselves on at least ten of the full-size obstacles the top competitors tackle, but with a more manageable distance of one mile. Designed for kids ages 8 to 13, your kids can sample the mud crawls, climbing walls, slip and slides and our “boot camp” military fitness exercise. All with Navy SEAL motivation throughout the course as your kids work with other racers as an individual or on a team. Flex Belt Review

I was recently contacted by Flex Belt to see if I wanted to try out there product. Normally I am not one to take the quick fix over diet and exercise, but as a busy working mom of two, I am up for a little bit of help. Here is the information that Flex Belt sent to me about how it works:

- The unique construction of the Flex Belt® features three pre-positioned, medical-grade Gel Pads, covering the central abdominals and external obliques.
- During your toning session, signals from the Flex Belt® reach out to nerves where they are most concentrated.
- These nerves branch out to all of the stomach muscles causing them to contract and relax naturally, working all of the muscles at the same time, not just those directly under the gel pads.

So i decided to do some before and after pics for you all with my review. Here is the before 6 months post baby girl #2....

At first I did not think it was working, I guess I was stronger then I thought. But once I turned up the intensity, I really started to feel it. I tried it the first few times sitting down at work, then got more daring and would try it while I was doing things around the house. Boy can the Flex Belt help you kick up the sweat factor of any job!

Here are my after pictures about 3 weeks later.

Maybe it is just wishful thinking, but I really feel like my tummy looks smaller and that the mommy pouch is gone.

Side note I was also doing my normal exercise routine during this time, but I do feel that the Flex Belt really helped to get my abs back in shape. I am defiantly doing to keep using it.

**I was not compensated for this post, all opinions are my own and results are real. I was sent a Flex Belt to try for this review.

Exercises to Do While Pregnant - Guest Post

Excitement abounds when it is learned that a couple is expecting a child. It is a wondrous occasion that deserves the attention that it gets. But don’t let that excitement fade too quickly.
If you are pregnant take that excitement into a mindset of staying healthy, including exercising. Working out is a fabulous way for women to stay vibrant and full of energy during their nine months of carrying a child. Although it is important to note that there are certain aspects of exercise that an expectant mom should stay away from including:
·         High impact exercises that involve jumping, bouncing, skipping or hopping
·         Workouts that include deep knee bends, straight leg toe touches or double leg raises
·         Any contact sports like softball, volleyball or basketball
·         Sports that have a high likelihood of falling such as skiing and riding a horse
·         Activities that force you to hold your breath for a long period of time
·         Or exercises that require intense activity with long rest periods in between.
Although it is important to talk with your doctor about what the best exercises are for you, it is also important to know that being pregnant does not mean you are stuck to the couch. On the contrary, check out these exercises that are perfect for most expectant moms…

  1. Swimming: enjoying a nice swim in a lake or pool is fabulous for mommies-to-be in the summer. Not only does it help cool you down, but it is also a superb way to get yourself away from the nasty effects of gravity. Give your knees and ankles a little break by swimming, and use the time to feel the beautiful effects of weightlessness.

  1. Brisk Walking: Walking with purpose is a wonderful way to get your heart rate up while avoiding the pounding on your joints that running can do. This is also a great way for a person that is new to exercising to get up and do something. Try short walks at first, and then work your way into longer strolls. Walking is also a great activity for the spouse to get involved in as well, as it gives a chance for the couple to have quiet chatting time.

  1. Indoor Stationary Cycling: It is true that a pregnant lady should be careful riding her bike out on the streets. But that is not to say she can’t get some pedaling in indoors. Stationary cycles are great to get the heart rate up and keep it up in a steady and safe way.

  1. Elliptical Machines: an elliptical or step machine is an excellent way to get exercise while pregnant. It is easy on the joints, while working the entire body at the same time, offering a way to get the best of both worlds in exercise.

  1. Yoga: possibly one of the best activities for a pregnant woman, yoga offers not only a way to eliminate stress, but it also provides a way to connect with the breath which is vital in the labor aspect of pregnancy. Yoga also increases flexibility and releases toxins from the body, aiding the mother in feeling her best.

HAWMC - Learning

One thing that I have learned is that there is no one right way to be healthy. I always thought that there was a right way to be healthy and now I realize that I need to do what works best for me.

I have learned that I have to do things in moderation. Cutting things out just makes me want them more (hello chocolate I am talking to you). Exercise makes me happy, so I need to fit it most days, but I also need to not stress when I do not have the time to fit it in. It is important but should not make or break my day. I need to learn to enjoy things and have fun with them and just have a healthy lifestyle be part of that, but not the focus of everyday.

What have you learned to help you stay healthy?

HAWMC- Aspiration

 “If I could do anything as a Health Activist…” Think big today! Money/ time/ physical limitations
are no longer an issue. What is your biggest goal that is now possible?

Wow talk about a lofty question....... I would love to become a yoga teacher!

Yoga has really helped me in a number of ways and I would love to be able to share that with others. I think that people do not realize all the benefits of yoga or that it can be good for ANYONE. I was not sold on the idea at first,  but have found it so helpful to me with getting pregnant, dealing with my back/leg issues, and in general just dealing with stress. I would love to be able to share this with other. So if any one wants to support me ($$) in becoming a yoga teacher, I am all in!
