In love with my acupressure mat

So I wrote a bit ago about this awesome acupressure mat that I was lucky enough to get to try. Here is my official flow up and proclamation of love for this amazing acupressure mat.  First of all it took no time what so ever to incorporate this into my daily routine, because you just need to sit or lay on it! I mean how easy is that! The benefits are amazing. I am sleeping better, I feel more relaxed, and I feel like my stress level is way down. There is something about just knowing that you are taking time for yourself that makes you feel better.

Also I feel like I have been able to recover from my workouts a lot quicker. I know some people will tell me I am crazy, but I think I recover quicker when I am more relaxed. I would highly recommend that anyone that needs help relaxing (ok all of us!!) try one of these acupressure mat, because seriously how easy is it to sit down for 5 minutes each night!

Reasons to love Aaptiv

Scale and Freshness: More than 2,500 classes are available on the platform. There are 20 active trainers who create new classes each week. More than 50 classes are added to the Aaptiv platform every week. Each class is individually produced in a professional recording space, with state-of-the-art sound mixing technology powered by a talented sound engineering team.
Affordability: For $14.99 a month or $99.99 for the year, members get unlimited, on-demand access to classes in running, cycling, elliptical, strength training, stair climbing, and more. Access to exceptional personal training has never been easier, coming at a fraction of the cost of hiring a personal trainer, purchasing expensive equipment, or being confined to one fitness location.

Convenience: Wherever individuals prefer to work out -- at the gym, at home, on the road for business -- Aaptiv goes along with its members. This factor has helped Aaptiv scale much more quickly than services that are confined to particular equipment or studio locations. Aaptiv classes can be taken anywhere, at any time.

Empathy: Most fitness solutions expect people to change their programs and routines. Aaptiv lets people choose the workout types and locations they prefer, and “meets” each member on their own fitness journey. Trainers conceive of and produce workout classes that suit the needs of people at every stage of fitness: novice, beginner, intermediate, or advanced. A Facebook community of more than 22,000 devoted Aaptiv members interact regularly with trainers to learn about how they can get even more out of their workouts.

Differentiators: Aaptiv is the only fitness company that focuses exclusively on audio content. Audio as a means is also underappreciated. It’s the most natural fashion for consuming content because it’s how people already communicate. The success of the medium is reflected in the growth of Audible, podcasts, and products like Amazon’s Alexa, Google Now, and Siri. Aaptiv’s all-you-can-eat model provides accessibility that has never existed in fitness before.

Starting the year off healthy

I think the new year makes everyone stop and thinking about being more healthy. Sometimes it lasts all year (Yay to me for last year) sometimes it does not (most years!). I always like to make all our family Doctor's appointments at the start of the year (or try to anyway). I thought this graphic was super helpful to remind people what appointments they need as they get a little older.

Mesothelioma Awareness Day

I wanted to share again about the importance of this day, in regards to Cancer Awareness.

Mesothelioma is a rare form of cancer that’s most often caused by asbestos exposure. It usually forms in the lungs of those who have been exposed to this deadly toxin, but sometimes occurs in the abdominal area or the area around the heart. There are a number of therapies available that can help prolong survival and minimize symptoms and discomfort, but in most cases the cancer is too aggressive and too advanced at the time of diagnosis to be cured. This disease specifically impacts a thin membrane that protects the lungs, heart and organs within the abdominal cavity and enables them to function properly. This is called the mesothelium and the majority of cases of this type of cancer affect the pleura, the mesothelium that lines the lungs.

My husband's grandfather died of this years ago so it is something that is important to our family.

Approximately 3,000 people are diagnosed with mesothelioma of all types in the United States every year. In most cases, these victims’ exposure took place on the job and the cause of the illness can be traced to an unsafe workplace.

For example, in the past, an overwhelming amount of job sites across the nation used asbestos-containing materials (ACMs) in buildings, equipment, products, machinery, insulation, electrical wiring, and more.

Workers were exposed to ACMs each time they went to work, inhaling tiny, odorless asbestos fibers. Once the fibers become lodged in the body, it’s literally impossible to expel all of. Over time, the workers began developing asbestos-related illnesses, such as mesothelioma, asbestosis, and asbestos-related lung cancer.

With changing regulations and mitigation, exposure to asbestos is on the decline, but people continue to be diagnosed. This is because the disease has what is known as a long latency period. This means that the amount of time that can pass between the time of exposure to asbestos and the time that symptoms begin to appear can be as long as fifty years.

It is an unfortunate reality, but medical science has made great strides in understanding how this deadly disease progresses and various ways to prolong and improve the lives of those who have been diagnosed with the condition. Currently, however, there is still no cure for asbestos illnesses.

Take Your Lunches Up a Notch with a Healthy Asian Twist

It's time to rethink your lunches with the help of San-J, known for their premium gluten-free, Non-GMO Asian inspired cooking sauces.  You can get ready for spring clean eating, without having to sacrifice delicious flavor.

Try these new gluten-free recipes created by clean-eating expert and author of "Eating Clean: The 21 Day Plan to Detox, Fight Inflammation and Reset Your Body,” Amie Valpone. By using San-J’s line of gluten-free sauces, mix it up  with these salads and wraps for a healthy spring lunch or afternoon snack. From orange turmeric wild rice to sweet and tangy chicken wraps, your spring will be bursting with flavor. The health booster, Turmeric, has also never tasted this good!

Orange Turmeric Wild Rice Salad

Ingredients
½ cup Wild rice
½ teaspoon Ground turmeric
4 Beets (large)
1 tablespoon Extra-virgin olive oil
1 cup Snap peas
1 Pineapple (small), peeled and diced
1 tablespoon Fresh cilantro, finely chopped
Sea salt, to taste
Freshly ground pepper, to taste
2 tablespoons San-J Orange Sauce
1 tablespoon Sesame seeds
¼ Teaspoon Ground cayenne pepper or chili powder

Directions
Preheat the oven to 350 degrees F.
Cook the wild rice according to the package directions. Add the turmeric to the cooking water and mix well. Poke holes in the beets using a fork. Place the beets on a rimmed baking sheet and drizzle with olive oil. Bake for 30 minutes then increase the heat to 400 degrees F and roast for another 25 minutes or until beets are tender.
Remove the beets from the oven, and set aside to cool for 10 minutes. Peel and dice each beet into ½ inch pieces.  In a large bowl, combine the cooked wild rice, beets, snap peas, pineapple, cilantro, sea salt and pepper. Add the San-J Orange Sauce and cayenne pepper; toss to combine. Garnish with the sesame seeds and serve immediately.

Another great use for your San-J Orange Sauce is to add a depth of flavor to any sauteed veggies. We have had a lot of veggies thanks to our summer CSA (thank you Johnson's Farm) so I decided to add some San-J Orange Sauce (our favorite) to the red chard I was doing a simple salute with.

Ingredients
1 teaspoon oil
1 teaspoon minced garlic
1 bunch red chard
2 tablespoons San-J Orange Sauce

Directions
Heat a medium skillet with oil and add garlic. Once the garlic is fragrant, add your chard and saute for about 10 mins. Finally add the San-J Orange Sauce stir to combine and serve.

The Best Toys & Activities For Children’s Vision

As parents we always want what’s best for our kids and when it comes to protecting their valuable vision, there’s a lot more we can do besides giving them more carrots and taking them to see the eye doctor on a regular basis. As a matter of fact, when it comes to avoiding a laundry list of possible vision problems, many parents may not realize that playtime can be the perfect time to develop our children’s eyesight.

Games like hide-and-seek or “peek-a-boo” certainly make good use of growing vision, but check out these age-related games, toys and activities that are good for kids:

Birth to Six Months: Brightly colored rattles, squeaky toys, crib mobiles and gyms. Play patty cake and peek-a-boo with them.

Six Months to One Year: Colorful stuffed animals, floating bath toys, building blocks and other stackable items. Begin introducing them to books, especially those designed for the youngest of eyes and tiniest of hands. Roll a ball to them, tap a balloon through the air and read together with your child while they look on.

Year One: Continue with toys that require hand-eye coordination like building blocks and step it up a notch with a rocking chair and riding toys. Begin to teach them to play catch and encourage them to look at books on their own.

Two Year Olds: Time to break out the paper, pencils, markers and crayons. More advanced learning types of toys, puzzles, sorting shapes, sizes and colors. Aiming activities like ring toss or bean bag targets and take them outdoors to play catch.

Three to Six Years: Building toys with snap together pieces, more advanced puzzles, finger paint, chalk, modeling clay and large balls. Books with activities like connect-the-dots, games, stickers and other projects. Introduce them to playground equipment, especially those that require balance and grasping. Consider a tricycle and then starting them out on a bicycle with training wheels.

Seven Years and Older: Teach them to ride a bike and other activities like jump rope and roller skates. Introduce them to different types of sporting spheres, baseballs, basketballs, soccer balls and (although they’re not round) footballs. More sophisticated building toys and puzzles. Remote controlled toys, board games and other thought involved games and activities.

SAFETY FIRST

Remember to always have children use the proper protective gear, not just helmets when necessary, but also appropriate eyewear when needed. Eye injuries are the leading cause of blindness in children and 90% of sports related injuries could have been avoided with the use of things like goggles, safety shields, eye guards and other protective gear designed for a specific sport or activity.

When your child is outdoors, you apply sunscreen, but don’t forget about sunglasses. Be sure to invest in at least one pair of high-quality sunglasses that can block out up to 99% of the sun’s harmful UV rays. And remember, sunglasses aren’t just for summer, they should be worn year round to protect young eyes.

Your Holistically Hot Transformation Book Review

I wanted to share this amazing book that is coming out this week. Your Holistically Hot Transformation by Marissa Vicario is the best new lifestyle book out there, and the last one you will buy! Marissa's approach to healthy eating and making good choices is all about balance. She shares tips and tricks that have helped her find a good balance, but she acknowledges that we will all not be perfect 100% of the time and that is OK!

What it is ok not to be perfect with your eating? Why is it that once it is written in a book it makes it such an easier thing to believe. Sometimes I think that it is the little things like that which causes the biggest changes in us all. This book is a nice quick read and Marissa shares tips along the way to help you make small changes to your diet and lifestyle.

This is the book for you if you want to make some healthy changes but do not want to do them all at once.

Check out Your Holistically Hot Transformation and get the Kindle version for FREE this week!

Spring Cleaning the Healthy Way

Spring clean is an essential part of most people moving into the new spring season and in my case in moving this winter. I wanted to share my methods and favorite products for cleaning up and around the house.

First of all I am huge fan of natural cleaners. I use a 1/2 and 1/2 vinegar and water solution for almost all the surfaces in my home. I like that it is natural and that the kids and join in the cleaning. My 4 year old loves to help clean!

When you have those more stubborn stains in the bathrooms I like to add a little Seventh Generation Dish Soap to the mix. Do equal parts of the dish soap to the vinegar and water mix.

With little ones that are sensitive to most dyes and perfumes, Seventh Generation is my go to when I buy cleaning products.

I also like to use microfiber cloths to clean with so that we are not creating as much waste. These are one of my favorites

Also this time of year I like to clean out the extra junk (ok maybe that is because some stuff was left in our new house.) We had a lot of paint cans left (after I went through and matched all the paint colors up!) that needed to go. I think it is always important to check where to drop off paint and other chemicals. Our township makes it super easy to dispose of these things, they have a drop off right behind the township building, but I recommend that everyone find out what your town policy is. It is always best with little ones to keep these things out of the house.

TKO Ab Stretch 4-Way Resistance Bands Review

I love a good at home workout. Before Little B was born, I started working with a personal trainer that showed me the amazing things I can do with resistance bands. Let me tell you I have never been in better space then when I work out with them.

When I was asked to try TKO's Ab Stretch 4-Way Resistance Bands I jumped at the chance.

I always enjoy when you can tell a product is durable right from the start. Here is what they say about the TKO's Ab Stretch 4-Way Resistance Bands

  • Adjustable tension for varied resistance
  • Lightweight and portable so you can take it on-the-go
  • Tightens abdominals, sculpts arms and back

HAWMC- Recap

 Describe your HAWMC experience in one word!

REFLECTIVE!

HAWMC - Congratulations

 We all know Health Activists are awesome. Share three things you love about yourself, things
you’re great at, or just want to share. Don’t undercut or signpost!

Wow, why is it always hard to think about good or positive things about ourselves? Especially for women! I think men are generally much better at this, but as women we have a hard time with it. Ok so here are the 3 things I love about me:

1- I love my stomach and my butt (very shallow I know). I have worked very hard to keep both in shape and I love that I have been able to do so even after giving birth.
2- I am super organized and love that I can share that with other and help them get organized.
3- I make a really great chocolate chip cookie! I have made some pretty great cookies since I was young so I am quiet proud of that ability.

What makes you awesome?

HAWMC - Titles

 If you wrote a book about your life, your community, your condition, or your Health Activism –
what would you title it? Come up with 5 working titles.
 What about your biography?

I thought this was an interesting and fun question, so here are my titles:

1. Just me and my frugal kitchen (Could not help it)
2. Saving vs. spending
3. The joy of the bargain hunt
4. Healthy on a Budget
5. Happy, Healthy, and Thrifty

What would you call your book?

HAWMC- Pain Free Pass

 What’s a day that you wish you could have used a pain-free pass (either in the future or the
past)? How would being pain or worry-free impact that day?

I would go back to our vacation with Little Miss last summer. It was her first time at the beach and although I pushed through the pain, I feel like I would have been able to do more with her if I was pain free.

I think that not being in pain would have allowed me to truly enjoy the trip with Little Miss. Although I think we had a great time, I would love to have had the change to walk along the beach more and take her on trips all over the area walking (not driving!). Hopefully this year we will be able to do all those things when we go back!

HAWMC - Learning

One thing that I have learned is that there is no one right way to be healthy. I always thought that there was a right way to be healthy and now I realize that I need to do what works best for me.

I have learned that I have to do things in moderation. Cutting things out just makes me want them more (hello chocolate I am talking to you). Exercise makes me happy, so I need to fit it most days, but I also need to not stress when I do not have the time to fit it in. It is important but should not make or break my day. I need to learn to enjoy things and have fun with them and just have a healthy lifestyle be part of that, but not the focus of everyday.

What have you learned to help you stay healthy?

HAWMC- Day to Day

 Write about something ordinary that’s inspiring to you, something simple, perhaps overlooked,
that fuels your activism.

This was such as easy post for me! This is what inspires me each day

Little Miss is the reason I try to live a healthy life and want to be the best person I can. Her little smiles and "mommy's" are what make my days!

What brings light to your day?
